About S.A.F.E. and the Citizens' Recycling Center

Our History

The Citizen's Recycling Center is operated by the San Angelo Friends of the Environment(SAFE), which was started in 1990 by a group of concerned citizens. The first recycling drive was held at the San Angelo Nature Center in April 1990 and was so popular that more drives were held monthly for the next four years.

In 1993, Reece Albert, Inc. gave SAFE a one-year lease on property at 925 Knickerbocker Road. With donations of materials from local businesses and manpower from Goodfellow Air Force Base and other organizations within the local area, the Center opened on the lease land in 1994. Reece Albert, Inc. generously extended the lease, and the Recycling Center continued to operate from the Knickerbocker location until it finaly moved to its present location at Warehouse Road, just off of Jackson Street.

Today the Center relies on help from many volunteers to make improvements and to help operate the facility and is always looking for volunteers to help. The Center is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and receives donations of time and materials from citizens, local businesses, groups and organizations. The Center is not run by the City of San Angelo or Tom Green County, but they are both cooperative and work very closely on many of the Center's projects.
